Silk Stoles and Shawls: Mulberry, Tanchoi and Benares

Our mulberry silk stoles and shawls are hand-woven in Benares (Varanasi), the historic cradle of silk weaving in India, using the traditional technique of Tanchoi — intricate woven patterns, the result of expertise passed down through the generations by our partner craftspeople. Some pieces also feature these patterns Jamavar, renowned for their intricate floral designs and exquisite craftsmanship, characteristic of India’s finest textile traditions.

Unlike smaller scarves or twillies, these stoles and shawls are available in large sizes, designed to complement an evening look or add a touch of elegance to a daytime outfit. The mulberry silk used here is the finest and smoothest of all natural silks — to understand what sets it apart from wild silks such as Tussar or Muga, see our guide to types of silk and their characteristics.

These pieces are part of our Bénarès Silk Collection, which brings together our entire range of Tanchoi and Jamavar weaves, as well as our Indian Mulberry Silk Collection more broadly. For smaller sizes in the same material, take a look at our Hand-woven Mulberry Silk Twillies from Benares and our Hand-woven Mulberry Silk Squares from Benares.

At Tohora, every shawl is imported directly from the workshops in Benares, guaranteeing the authenticity of the weaving and fair pay for the artisans who keep this centuries-old textile art alive.
